Adult Forum…

Today and continuing through Lent:  Journey through the Psalms -- Dr. Denise Dombkowski Hopkins will lead us via DVD as we look at the psalms as “a school of prayer.” Psalm language helps us understand God and our relationship to God, who we experience as both present and absent. We’ll explore models of prayer allowing us to be honest about the full range of our emotions--fear, praise, anger, thanksgiving, joy and despair. Although this is a series, each week’s lesson is complete in itself, so come whenever you are able.

The 2010 Season of Lent begins this week!

Please join us for our Wednesday Lenten Services.

Services (including Ash Wednesday) are at 10:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall and

6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.

We begin on Ash Wednesday, with Holy Communion

and Imposition of Ashes (optional).

Our theme for Lent is: Heroes of the Bible.

Come and listen to the great stories of Joseph, Moses, David, and Esther.

These were real people who did extraordinary things through God’s help.

Their stories still speak to us and give us encouragement and guidance.

Please join us for the Lenten Soup Suppers each Wednesday, serving from

5:00 - 6:15 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Your church will feed you well!!

(By the way, we’re not giving up dessert for Lent!)

Soup menu for Ash Wednesday:  the Chili Supper hosted by our youth.

No Thursday evening worship during the Lenten season.

You’re Invited to a Planning Forward Meeting…

with Bishop Justman on Wednesday, February 24, following the evening Lenten service. Bishop Justman will  meet with the Church Council and interested congregation members to discuss the steps we need to take to call a great pastor to help us lead First English. We’ll meet in the Fireside Room. See you then!

Join Us As We Dedicate…

our new Handicap Accessibility area! Next Sunday, February 21, 2010

Following each service on next Sunday, we will gather at the handicap entrance in the front of the church (lecturn side) and have a brief dedication service, followed by a walk-through of the area to the library/office area. Refreshments will follow in Fellowship Hall. Through all the days of and weeks of renovation, this area has become a beautiful addition to our church building and will be a welcoming asset for all who come to worship and enjoy fellowship here at First English. Come and be a part of this dedication!

A New Book Study…

will be starting in February. “Making Sense of Scripture” by David J. Lose invites the reader to engage in a conversation about seven major questions of the Bible. Published by Augsburg Fortress, this book is part of the foundation for the ELCA’s “Book of Faith” study series. It is fairly easy reading and in everyday language. There are reflection questions in the book and in a separate leader’s guide. A group will meet on Sunday evenings beginning this evening, Feb. 21, 6:30 p.m., at Kiepers’. There are 7 sessions, with frequency and length of the study to be determined. Call Kathy at 359-8592 if you’d like to be part of the study. More groups can be formed at other times if there is enough interest.

Men’s Retreat

March 5-6, 2010 - Imago Dei Village…

Join us for a weekend of renewal and fellowship! Pastor Al Moen of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Plover will be taking us through the book, I Sold My Soul on eBay by Hemant Mehta, an atheist who “hired out” to go to churches to critique them. Hemant wrote about each church he was assigned to attend, telling what his experience was as he came through the doors, went to worship, and went back out again. Would he be interested in coming back or was it a total turn off? The book is a helpful read for us to come to grips with discussing what an unchurched person or a young couple looking for

a new church home might be thinking when they worship at our church for the first time. We will also take a look at one of the ministries that Hemant liked: Rob Bell at Mars Hill.  Cost: $60 per person. Registration forms are on the narthex table - or you can register on-line at www.crosswayscomeps.org.

Glocal Mission Gathering …

Connecting Global and Local = Glocal

Why attend the Glocal Mission Gathering?

The ELCA Glocal Mission Gathering brings together experts and resources on global and domestic ministry under one roof, for one weekend, in one convenient location so congregational leaders can build skills you need to be an effective part of God’s mission no matter where you serve. Your input into this event will also help ELCA Global Mission serve more effectively.

Why attend?

Mission takes place everywhere in the world - including North America, where it influences our ministry every day. By understanding how God’s activity is changing the world around us, we can build and develop skills that help us engage, serve, support, learn, and travel more effectively, globally and domestically. These skills can help you be an effective part of God’s mission.
